Bromine and alkaline water

Swimming pools have used chlorine for over a hundred years. It can work well, but requires constant chemical balancing. Worse, it creates highly irritating byproducts called chloramines that burn the eyes.

A gentler disinfectant

Bromine is a gentler disinfectant used in spas and hot tubs. It does not make chloramines and is renowned for non-irritating water. But spa bromine is very expensive and could not be used to treat a whole pool.

Extensively tested in over 2000 Australian pools, Swim Research brings bromine to backyard pools cheaply by using a catalyst found in seawater that lets your chlorinator make bromine.

Less maintenance

Unlike chlorine, bromine works in alkaline water, at seawater pH, so you don't have to keep adding acid.

Alkaline water doesn't need regular water balancing. The pH is just right, and the calcium in tap water and carbon dioxide from the air is enough to balance your pool. So you don't need to add acid, hardener and buffer.

So we eliminate chloramines and regular water balancing. Easier to look after, less chemicals, and no more red eyes!

A Swim Research pool is simple:

  • Add Catalyst and Conditioner twice a year
  • Stop adding acid, calcium, buffer and sunscreen

Everything else stays the same:

  • Add salt as usual. We recommend magnesium minerals
  • Run your chlorinator as usual
  • Remove leaves and keep your pool clean as usual
